Vegetarian for a month-Week 2

Week two and I am proud to say I remained a vegetarian diet through the OC Fair and Medieval Times. (Scott indulged at the fair, but this is our experiment so he can do as he likes.) The fair was the first time I genuinely missed meat with all of the turkey legs walking past me. Don't let me fool you into thinking I ate well though-cheese on a stick? I definitely didn't feel great the next day.

Monday: Goat cheese tart and salad (really good, will make again)

Tuesday: Lentil fritter pitas with red cabbage slaw (good, but I did not know you had to cook the lentils before using them. So these little patties were rather tough. Good workout for the teeth.)

Wednesday: Stuffed portobellos and caprese salad

Thursday: Fair

Friday: Medieval Times

Saturday: Cheesy penne and haricot verts (I upped the veggie factor on the penne, since that version is rather indulgent. I added spinach, arugula, and mushrooms to bulk up the iron and fiber. I also omitted the bacon from the haricot verts.)

All in all this continues to go well. Still feeling well, still working out 4-5 days per week with running/walking, Zumba, Piyo and yoga.

Getting Back in Shape

This week marks 6 weeks post surgery, which means I am allowed to jump back on the exercise bandwagon. Figuring baby steps were in order, I attempted the tread mill on a steep incline to burn, and would see how I felt before running. WOW, I did try, and it felt like my legs weighed about 95 pounds.

I realized this is the first time I have ever stopped exercising in my life, as I've always done something-softball, dance, dance team, the gym, or simply walking the dog.

I am hoping that with a few more sessions, and even keeping up with The Shred again, I'll regain my energy and strength. Even though I complain and moan internally about having to do it, I realize how those endorphins really do kick in and make you feel good. And the morning-after pains really make it feel like you did a good job.

Shredding

Not receipts.
Not cheese.
But fat.

I am a devoted reader of WeddingBee even almost a year after being married. Boys calls this wedding porn for women, and I completely agree. I love the essence of weddings and with two of my girls getting married and coordinating one for a third friend, I need to research these things anyway.

Moving on, most brides want to look their best on the big day and swear by Jillian Michaels' "The Shred." I follow a few of the bees on Twitter and last week local lovely Mrs. Meatball posted that it was just $6 on Amazon. Well I hurried my derriere over there to make a contribution to the economy.

The workout is based on the 3-2-1 method: 3 minutes of strength training, 2 minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of abs, done 3 times, for a 20 minute workout. Normally each week I swim or run 4-5 days and consider myself in pretty good shape, but needed a little extra oomph as I wasn't seeing the results I wanted. This video had over 1000 comments of women raving about it, so I was certain it would work. Well level one could have been level 10! I was sweating in the warm up! Good golly miss Molly my muscles were screaming at me. Jillian doesn't let you take breaks either. She is very much a drill seargeant/nazi leader/fat camp counselor--it's fitting seeing she is the trainer on the Biggest Loser. Her principles ring true though-stick to the workout for 30 days and I can only imagine you'll see results. My day one results: rock solid calves. Note to self: self-stretching required for those muscles.

I had thought about doing a photo series of my body as it lost weight but I am both too vain (assuming I end up looking like a Brazilian supermodel) and too private, though it would hold me accountable. I know, how can you hold two opposite thoughts of that nature-I am a woman. If I see crazy dramatic results before and after the 30 days, I'll do two of those photos. We'll see how far I've come in the toning department come August 24!
